I just finished reading Ariel Gore's How To Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead. I have been trying to explain to those who haven't heard of Ms. Ariel who she is and what she has written. She is most famous for her Hip Mama zine. She has made being a mother such a wonderful adventure in personhood through her writing. To me she is just a freaking amazing writer. I bought her book partially because I want to start writing again but the truth is she could write a book about the rights of robots in Missouri and I would read it. Her writing is fun and always interesting regardless of the topic.
Alright enough already about my love for Ariel's writing.....This is about the book. It is made up of millions of tiny chapters....well not millions, more like 78. Along with wonderful advice about how to become the writer you knew you were but never dared to promote, she has interviews with other authors and wonderful quotes. The interviews are witty nontraditional exchanges between Ariel and the likes of Julia Alvarez, Dave Barry, Margaret Cho, Susie Bright, and Michelle Tea....weee. There are more but I don't want to take away all the suspense. This is part DIY how to and part conversation with like minded litstars. This is the book you turn to when you forgot your artist in a closet and realize that she is the part of yourself you like best. Buy this book and feed her. |
